The Challenge

The Army & Air Force Exchange Service or “AAFES,” is the retailer on U.S. Army and Air Force installations worldwide. Due to the construction of these buildings, which range in size from 40,000 sqft all way up to 300,000 sqft, indoor coverage was very weak. In 2010 a request for bids went to market for a vendor to supply, deploy and commission Distributed Antenna Systems (DAS) in over 100 of these locations that spanned the entire continental USA and beyond. 

The challenge was to design and spec a competitively priced DAS from a floor plan only (all site unseen), schedule to deploy and commission all locations within a 6 month period and guarantee their performance or take corrective action at our expense. JDTECK was the successful vendor on this bid, but it would be the start of a major undertaking to say the least.

Our Approach

We had to secure several additional installation teams, get them quickly trained and ready to execute all these deployments within the 6 month deadline we were given. There were some months where as much as 23 installations were taking place at the same time. This took a great amount of planning, organization, management skills and very little sleep for our engineering team to be able to deal with all challenges that arose. Technical support was provided round the clock as installations were being completed at all hours of the day and night which required oversight during commissioning and optimization. 

Locations were grouped together in a specific sequence which took into consideration many different parameters. With the exceptional skills of our entire team, we were able to successfully complete the project. Not only did we complete it within budget, but also 4 weeks in ahead of our deadline.

The Results

The results of this project was improved reception for all carriers at all locations.
